Featured Artist Julie Zarrow Erickson
Julie is an emerging artist with some new things to say and some new ways of saying them. She lives minutes away from the ocean and Santa Monica beaches which supply her with limitless ingredients for inspiration. Her work is a dialog with the spirit of those places. She is particularly interested in finding the spaces where representation and abstraction coexist. Julie believes that it is her open-mindedness and willingness to experiment that have guided her best.
"I believe the inspiration for putting beads on rocks came to me after going to the ocean one late afternoon right after a storm in February. Tons of rocks had been washed up onto the sand and they were all wet. The sun kept peeking in and out from behind the clouds and, to my eyes, the different colored rocks glistened like so many gems. Right then and there I started scooping up rocks and filling my pockets with them. It was a powerful experience that has never left me, and rocks have been central to my art ever since."
